LEGO Minifigures Online is an online game themed around the collectable Lego minifigures sold in foil packs at retail. In the game you can win or purchase the characters and then take them on adventures with family and friends.

The game has just gone into open beta which means we have our first look at what the game is about and how it plays. The early stages of the game introduce players to the controls and starting characters. They take you on an adventure where you battle ghostly pirates and journey through a LEGO forest.

LEGO Minifigures Online is a free-to-play online game for the PC with an iPad version due later this year. The game offers a subscription model that rewards you with weekly diamonds, a minifigure bag every month, exclusive quests and enables you to earn stars at a faster rate - which you use to upgrade your minifigures.

The game offers not only some great Lego entertainment but also some strong learning and developmental features as well. As described in the literature, here's what it has to offer the young player:

  • Problem Solving: Learn the changing mechanics of the game, adapt and overcome the challenges!
  • Teamwork: Work with others to see the strength of teamwork!
  • Reactions: Many things happen at the same time and decisions must be made on the fly! Quick reactions also help build motor skills.
  • Resource Management and Planning: Plan and prioritize the use of stars for upgrades, as well as where to spend the diamonds.

As the game progresses you can unlock more areas to explore and different adventures. In this way it offers an expandable experience well suited to a variety of family players. Also, as you can see in the video below, it offers additional checks before allowing family members to make purchases in the game. Parents receive an email to check that the purchase is valid and are invited to set-up a special password.
