The release of Mario Party 10 is accompanied with new amiibo figures in the Super Mario range. These toy figurines not only unlock playable characters int he game, but grant access to different board games and the ability to store special items.

These are great features however for families it is the strong backwards compatibility that will be of most interest, along with cross-game functionality of some toy figures.

If you already own Mario, Luigi or Bowser from Super Smash Bros. you can use these in the new Mario Party 10 game with no further purchase to unlock characters and content. In addition the new Toad amiibo in the Super Mario range has a double purpose.

Like the other Super Mario amiibos he can be used in Mario Party 10, but also he unlocks a new game mode for every level of Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker. Here, placing the Toad amiibo on the game-pad provides a fresh challenge of hunting down and tapping a pixilated version of toad hidden in every level.

Finally, purchasing the Super Mario amiibos for use with Mario Party 10 also enables you to take them back into older games like Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart and Hyrule Warriors and play with them there. Parents should note that switching between games may mean the save progress needs to be erased.

This video compares the Smash Bros. and Super Mario amiibos to help you choose which you prefer. For more information on amiibo functionality check out the Nintendo amiibo website.
