LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an action-adventure spanning and spoofing a century of Batman stories from comics, TV, films, and games. Play involves gliding and grappling around the Lego open-world to solve puzzles and take on Arkham-style combat. It stands out for its tongue-in-cheek attempt to unify the legacy Batman narratives, the huge dark over-world and how this takes combat in more violent directions.

Starting as Bruce Wayne, you work to take on the Batman mantle in Gotham, then build alliances with Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Catwoman. Play involves the classic Lego busy work and combat. Here, though, the stakes are raised with more complex mechanics and a huge open world to explore. It's a game that spans iconic moments (and villains) from Batman’s history, like Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Bane, and more.
As you progress, Gotham City opens up with landmarks like Wayne Tower, Arkham Asylum, and Ace Chemicals, offering side missions, collectables and challenges. Like the Arkham games, you earn gadgets, vehicles like the Batmobile and Batcycle, and new traversal abilities that expand exploration and combat options. Still, with just seven main playable characters, the focus remains on putting each of their unique skills and teamwork to work rather than simply expanding a larger roster.
The result is a Lego Batman game that's come a long way since the popular DS Lego Batman title. This Gotham has surprising depth, lore and massive space to explore, but is given the humorous Lego treatment in every corner. It's fan-service but also a fresh telling for newcomers.
